KOREA’S MBC CHOOSES STUDER VISTA RANGE OF DIGITAL AUDIO CONSOLES FOR NEW HDTV PRODUCTION CENTRE
Munhwa Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) is one of the largest television and radio networks in South Korea and famous for its dramas and comedies, which is not surprising given that Munhwa is the Korean word for "culture."
MBC was founded in 1961 as a radio broadcaster, and moved into TV in 1969. The Corporation started to broadcast in digital in 2001, and, more recently, DMB in 2005. Once state-owned, the network is today 70% owned by the Foundation of Broadcast Culture and derives its income almost entirely from regular commercial advertising.
Using this income, the MBC is investing in a brand new building in Sangam Seoul, to house the ‘Ilsan Production Centre’. The new centre will be using Studer consoles to provide their viewers with the highest-quality digital broadcasting from the full HDTV studios. The Centre is planned to open by the end of year 2007 and start broadcasting in early 2008. The entire facility has been designed specifically for producing dramas and variety shows.
To this end, the MBC has selected seven Studer Vista consoles as the standard audio mixing format for these production facilities. Five Vista 8 consoles are specified, with 72 faders and redundant control systems. One of these desks will be installed into the custom-designed OB audio production vehicle. With 52 faders in the main frame and two additional 10-fader remote bays, this is the largest of the consoles with more than 200 inputs.
Two identical 72 fader Vista 8s with 112 inputs are to be installed in the Live Entertainment studios A & B, whilst the other two consoles, each supplied with 144 input channels, will be situated in the Recording studio and in the live Concert Hall.
Additionally within the new Ilsan Production Centre, will be two Drama Production Studios 1 & 3, where two 32-fader Vista 5 consoles will be used for the shows.
Studer’s VP Sales Ian Staddon reports that “the new production centre for MBC is the largest broadcast project in Korea in 2007. Many companies fought hard to be involved in this project, and we praise our distributor DYC which gave us a great deal of effort and support. Their success and superb after-sales support explains not only why they were successful with this tender, but why they have already sold over 40 Vista consoles into the Korean broadcast market.”
